Inkjet Expands into Packaging (part 2)

July 1 -- With increased focus on environmentally friendly products and processes, there has been a spur in UV inkjet technology. Since flexo printers -- traditionally the majority of label printers -- are already comfortable with UV technology, it makes for an easier adoption. UV inkjet works on a wide range of label substrate types, and offers a very durable solution, an important feature for many label converters.

July 1 -- Industry sources estimate the printed label market in the U.S. at approximately $14 billion and $28 billion worldwide. Of that market, labels printed by inkjet printing technology comprises a very small part, probably less than 1 percent. However, a combination of advantages that come from digital printing, as well as market forces in today's economy, is spurring a growth rate of at least 5 percent.

Smurfit-Stone Closes Box Plant, Laying Off 120 Workers
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. announced Friday it will close its Jacksonville box plant in the first quarter of next year.
The box plant employs 32 salaried workers and 88 hourly workers, said Mike Mullin, Smurfit-Stone director of media relations and public affairs. The facility fashions two types of paper stock into corrugated cardboard material and folds it into boxes, he said.

Rock-Tenn To Close Baltimore Carton Plant
Norcorss, GA-based Rock-Tenn (www.rocktenn.com) will close its 125-employee Baltimore folding-carton plant, moving production to four of its other plants in the Southeast and Canada. Operations will cease by the end of the month. The company cited slumping sales and increased costs as the reasons for the closure.

The prize is awarded annually after an election of an expert jury, and SuperSeal was rewarded for its end-user appeal, product safety and environmental advantages.
Green Packaging Solution: Both Bottle and Label
Post Consumer Regrind (PCR) is plastic products that have been recycled, which means they are ground down to be re-used in new manufacturing. Recycling can provide an efficient environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional disposal of materials to landfill.
