Sustainability is a Journey

Despite the attention that the economy is receiving both in the United States and Europe, the focus at this morning's session at AIMCAL's Fall Technical Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC was on sustainability, again reinforcing the staying-power of this issue.

Dow Chemical's Jeff Wooster gave the audience his take on the current state of sustainability, helping those in attendance to better understand the "big picture" view of the issue as it relates to packaging, and the limitations of the current approaches and strategies.

Through various examples, Wooster explained that the key to success of virtually any sustainability initiative is balancing the trade-offs for maximum environmental, social and economic benefit.

"Sustainability is a journey, not a destination," he said, adding that there isn't one answer for all applications and circumstances. He added that for most converters ad packaging companies, sustainability = long-term viability.

Maximizing your sustainability does not mean eliminating "waste," for example, said Wooster, as sometimes eliminating waste in some areas can create more waste in others. In order to be in a position to send nothing to a landfill, a converter may end up using much more energy or water resources, thus devaluing the act of not sending waste to a landfill.

The sustainability issue continues to be at top of mind for converters, and the AIMCAL Fall Technical Conference is providing more information for its members at this year's event.
